To cap off our 6th year at SXSW and follow up on last year’s amazingly successful Trend Lounge, we knew this year had to be bigger, better, more engaging, and of course, even more fun. As we know, long gone are the days of experiencing SXSW Interactive with just 9,000 other tech entrepreneurs and business brights – with 30,000 registrants in 2013 and the final numbers for 2014 still in the works.
As you might recall, our first installation of REACH, was back in November and covered disruptive technology in the gaming industry. While gaming shared the stage with other industry tracks for last week’s event: REACH | The Connected Future, it was well represented through the insights of a varied panel of experts, covering a wide range of gaming’s different moving parts.
Today, the Walt Disney Company & Techstars announce their plans to select ten startup companies for a three-month mentorship and seed-stage investment program. The LA-based program is powered by Techstars and focused on “technology-based companies focused on trnasformative media and entertainment experiences.” Applications are being accepted starting today, through April 16, 2014 for early-stage companies with innovative consumer media and entertainment product ideas. Online video is still growing. YouTube’s stats are larger than ever, Vine is reaching critical mass with its first TMZ controversy, and all the live streaming services are pivoting toward profitability. Altogether business is booming, but creativity is still up-and-coming with very few YouTubers making a successful transition to television.
Last Monday, Jan 6th, marked the culmination of AT&T’s Developer Summit at CES 2014 along with the release of open APIs for its U-Verse platform on Android. Now developers can build Android apps with AT&T Labs and AT&T Foundry to let customers better interact with their televisions from a smartphone, tablet or other such mobile devices.
